What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy provides a way of exploring our inner world of feelings, thoughts, and experiences through creative expression. When we connect with our non-verbal creative self, we give voice to that which may have no words or can be difficult to verbalize. Through the art making process, we can transform our inner world into a tangible visual form. Then, we can literally look at the feeling, thought, or experience and form a relationship with it, get some distance, look at it from all sides. It’s a very different perspective than trying to find the words to talk about what is going on inside. It’s coming from a completely different part of the brain!
What is Art Therapy like with Janet?
Janet has been practicing art therapy for over 35 years with children, adolescents, and adults in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, nursing homes, VA hospitals, and in private practice.
She also has training in Sand Tray therapy.
Her intention as an art therapist is to help others connect to their own creative process in an effort to promote emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being. Janet provides a safe and comfortable space
with as much opportunity as possible for connection to the creative self through a variety of art materials.

Is prior art experience necessary?
Prior art experience is not necessary! In fact, art therapy is especially helpful for those who do not have much experience with art materials. This is not about helping a person become an artist. It is about helping others connect to their own creative source, a source which is a vast and abundant and knowledgeable.
And, each one of us has access to our creative source given the right tools and guidance.

Sessions
Individual sessions
Janet utilizes both Art Therapy & Sand Tray Therapy in her work with individuals.
Art Therapy incorporates various art making modalities such as drawing, painting, collage, and clay to help address personal issues including depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, PTSD, self esteem, recovery, life transitions, and self discovery. Short, guided meditations and journaling are sometimes incorporated into these session.
Sand Tray Therapy is a nonverbal, therapeutic intervention that uses a sand tray, toy figures, and sometimes water, to create scenes of miniature worlds that reflect a person’s inner thoughts, feelings, struggles, and concerns. It is a modality that can be utilized with children,
teens, and adults and can be especially helpful for those individuals who have suffered trauma and/or may have difficulty expressing
themselves verbally.
Both sand tray therapy and art therapy give the individual an opportunity to create a tangible image of his/her inner world. Janet then helps guide the individual through reflection and verbal processing to better understand the connection between the world they have created in sand or art making and their own inner/outer world experiences.
