Artist journey...
Nature and my relationship with nature have always been the inspiration for my artwork. Having been an oil painter for much of my art making life, my interest shifted in recent years to making mosaics. This came about while doing occasional traditional tile work in home environments. I liked the process of working directly with the media using my hands to fit pieces together in unique patterns and then mixing and working with the grout to finalize and pull it together.
I quickly expanded the process of working with uniform geometric tiles into using a hammer to break pieces of ceramic and stained glass and then using those shapes to create images (abstract and realistic). Working with glass had its challenges and limitations, but overall, the process felt more active and refreshingly different than my days using a paint brush on paper or canvas.
Ultimately, I began “Living Space Mosaics”, a business of installing large scale mosaic constructions in homes and businesses such as fireplace surrounds, backsplashes, murals, and shower/tub surrounds. These days I have scaled back a bit and am now creating smaller pieces that can be hung on a wall. These pieces are made with stained glass and natural objects. They reflect my love of landscape, organic forms,
color relationships and natural light. I call this process "painting with glass".
